Review of The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi

After a 2 months summer break we are back for another book club season!
We started this time with reading: The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi by Shannon Chakraborty.
The book is about a middle-aged female pirate who does everything to protect her daughter in a 12th century Arabic/ Asian world were magic is not all that uncommon.
When this book was picked, we were all very hyped for a pirate read as we hadn't done one together before. And it certainly didn't disappoint in pirate theatrics!
Some of us did have to get used to the book's setting as many of us hadn't read books with the eastern and Arabic world as its center point before. This was mainly because we needed to get used to the Arabic phrases and way of speech, but it sure helped in setting the book's mood. (though we would have preferred a bigger and more detailed glossary at the end of the story)

The main themes in this book were of course piracy but also motherhood, loyalty and dare we say midlife crisis?
Amina left the pirate world to care for and protect her daughter. When her daughter's life was threatened she picked up her sword to protect her, but secretly she really wanted one more adventure at sea.
The motherhood theme stirred some discussions within the group, As some said the theme wasn't explored enough due to Amina leaving her daughter and not mention her enough throughout the book, where others liked the fact that she was a mother first and foremost but also knew she herself still had unfulfilled wants and dreams.  It was really interesting to read about Amina's doubts and guild about leaving her daughter but also learning that she could still be a mother and enjoy her life the way she craved.

The characters in the book were overall loveable and well put together, with each an intricate life story and personality. Our book club liked the characters and their developments, especially Raksh was a book club favorite!

Overall we concluded that the book was entertaining and well written. Everyone who finished it loved the little plot twist at the ending. And no, we will not spoil it, so you have to read it to find out. And about half of our group is excited to pick up the next book.
