Review of One dark window

Last Thursday the coven got together to discuss the book: One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig. After the tea was poured, we fired of with questions such as: What did you think of the books magic system? What about the author's writing style? We shared and compared our opinions, some complimenting one another and others miles apart. The majority of the book club loved the book, mainly because of its unique magic system with cards and its mild and refreshing romance. Though we did agree that the book didn't fit the enemies to lovers trope it was given. The main characters were never really at each other's throat and were, despite the circumstances, surprisingly kind to one another.
Especially the ending had us on the edge of our seats. Most of us can't wait to dig into the second book of the shepherd king series!

Our average rating: 3,87

"I personally LOVED the book. I thought the writing was clever, the plot itself might have been pretty predictable. But because of the complicated and alive feeling the magic system gave, made it overall a very interesting read with incredible characters (both the main and the side ones). I also think the romance itself was very cute and it made for a refreshing note in a normally gloomy world." ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

"I am not a die-hard fantasy-reader and was afraid it would be too much to grasp for me. But I really liked it. It was like a dark fantasy fairytale, including a very cool magic system, an enchanted forest, of course kings, princesses and family feuds, but also monsters, trickery and some romance. I gave it 3,5 stars (outta 5) and would def recommend. I am also curious to read the second book, but after reading some different things in between."

Fun fact: have you noticed the amount of times Elspeth was brought food or had asked for it, to then not eat a single bite of it? Was it really the nightmare acting up or was she just hangry? Thanks to one of our members for keeping track of this lovely detail.
